The Empire Strikes Out

Obama recently likened the GOP to "The Empire", the bad guys from the Star Wars movies.  Of successful GOP fundraising efforts he said "The Empire is Striking Back".

Darth Obama, Sith Lord,, Apprentice or Master??

First off, this is not a very Presidential comment.  It amounts to nothing more than petty name calling.  It also seems like a very bad comparison.  What was it that made The Empire, The Empire?  They were powerful.  They were deceitful and corrupt.  They ruled with fear.  Most of all, they wanted complete and absolute power, always more power.

The GOP is running on a platform of smaller government, reduced government spending and less government control.  This doesn't sound much like "The Empire" that I remember from Star Wars.  After thinking about the comparison however, I noticed some striking parallels between The Empire and the Democratic Party.

The biggest increases in federal spending have occurred under the Democrat's watch.  Federal spending grew 5% as a percentage of GDP under FDR (not including WW2) and a similar amount with Obama.  This sure seems like a big power grab to me.

In terms of corruption, somehow the Democrats seem to fare a little better than the GOP as far as public perception goes.  This is horribly confusing and is only explainable in terms of liberal media bias.  The Democrats have nearly cornered the market on corruption in recent years.  Eliot Spitzer (Attorney General involved in prostitution), Chris Dodd (sweetheart home loans and foreign real estate "gifts"), Charlie Rangel (tax evasion and trading political favors for campaign money), Tim Geithner (tax evading Treasury Secretary), Bill Jefferson (convicted of Bribery, had a freezer full of money), Rod Blagojevic (tried to sell Obama's Senate seat), and the list goes on.  These guys could give the Empire a run for their money any day.  The Emperor himself would be proud of such a track record.

In terms of ruling with fear, Obama is a master at conjuring imaginary devils and demons and using them to explain to the public why they need to relenquish more of their wealth, power and peronal liberty to uhhh, him and his Czars.  The public simply must be protected from the insurance industry, the banking industry, the energy industry, the health care industry and the evil automotive bondholders.  I'm not saying that all of these institutions are perfect, but at least they create jobs and wealth.   Overall, Obama's ability to create fear and uncertainty would be envied by any Sith Lord.

Obama is a indeed a gifted and talented politician.  Accusing an opponent of one's own transgressions can be an effective political tactic.  People living in glass houses should not throw stones however, because the wind and the rain will surely follow.
